That would put a shear force on the knee which would over-stress the knee joint. Leg presses, on the other hand can be good for your knees. The knee can handle the compressive force much better…even with an injured mcl. I do recommend two things though: Do a very slow repetition speed, say 4 seconds to lift the weight and four seconds to lower the weight.
